Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The Robert Sangster Stakes is a Group 1 Australian thoroughbred horse race held under set weight conditions, for fillies and mares aged 3 years old and upwards, over a distance of 1200m.

The race is held at the South Australian Jockey Club and run at the Morphettville Racecourse in April. Before 2006 it was held in February.

In 2005 the race was re-named the 'Robert Sangster Stakes' in honour of owner and breeder Robert Sangster who died in 2004.

The Robert Sangster Stakes is a sprint event for females during the Adelaide autumn racing carnival. The Robert Sangster Stakes is considered the premier race for fillies during this time. It mainly attracts good class gallopers searching for group one victory. The race tends to assemble a field of mostly local gallopers and some above average types from interstate.

One of the best lead-up races to this event is held a fortnight before at the Adelaide Autumn Carnival, the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes. A slightly shorter distanced sprint at 1100m, the RN Irwin Stakes is another weight-for-age event and many of the dominant females in this race continue their success in the Robert Sangster Stakes.

Contenders of the Robert Sangster Stakes may also consider racing in the Gr2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) later in April.
